In a 25-strain artificial gut community, the isosteviol-duloxetine pairing cut overall species diversity, reduced growth in 24 strains, and lowered butyric acid in Roseburia intestinalis by more than 25%.
Fluid from treated bacterial communities was more toxic to HeLa cells, while Caco-2 colon-like cells released more than 75% less IL-6 and IL-8, pointing to altered microbial outputs rather than direct drug or sweetener toxicity.
The authors said the work was entirely laboratory-based at a single tested concentration, so it does not show the same effects occur in people, even though duloxetine is used by more than 4 million U.S. patients.
