Zohran Mamdani said Tuesday that New York City cannot independently execute the ICC arrest warrant against Benjamin Netanyahu after reviewing every legal avenue available to the mayor's office.
The reversal came days after Mamdani said he was working with city lawyers on how to arrest Netanyahu if he visits New York for the U.N. General Assembly later this year.
Mamdani instead urged the federal government to join the ICC and enforce the warrant, though the U.S. has not ratified the Rome Statute and legal analysts say foreign-affairs authority rests with Washington.
Donald Trump said Monday that Netanyahu "will not be arrested," while Israel's U.N. ambassador Danny Danon accused Mamdani of serving "Hamas' propaganda."
The dispute stems from the ICC's 2024 warrant accusing Netanyahu and other Israeli leaders of war crimes tied to the Gaza war, allegations Israel denies.
