Christopher Nolan Bans Ugg Boots on Sets for 55-Year-Old Director's Actor Immersion Rule

Q: Nolan shot his epic entirely on IMAX, but what technical flaw nearly made filming quiet scenes impossible?

It was the IMAX camera’s noise problem. Traditional IMAX film cameras use a vacuum-driven mechanism that is loud enough to interfere with sync-sound recording, especially in very quiet scenes. That flaw nearly made intimate dialogue or low-volume moments impractical, because the camera itself could be picked up on set audio. The challenge was compounded by IMAX’s 15/70 film system, which prioritizes image area and uses separate synchronized sound rather than an embedded soundtrack. Nolan has long pushed the format despite those limits, and reporting around *The Odyssey* notes that newer, quieter IMAX cameras were developed in part to address exactly this issue. Even so, the core technical concern was that the cameras were historically too noisy for quiet scenes to be recorded cleanly.

Christopher Nolan said he bars actors from wearing Ugg boots between takes because the footwear signals modernity and pulls performers out of a film's world.
On CBS Mornings, the 55-year-old director compared the boots to off-camera junk food, saying even with cameras and crew visible, fluffy slippers can still break immersion.
Anne Hathaway said Nolan shut down her Uggs with a quick "Nope" on set, and Emily Blunt has described a similar order while filming with him in 2022.
The rule resurfaced as Nolan promotes The Odyssey, his July 17 release, after he recently stressed authenticity and immersion while discussing the film's demanding production.
