33 states and Washington, D.C., posted year-over-year construction job gains through June 2026, while 14 states lost jobs and three were unchanged, according to Associated General Contractors analysis of federal data.
Texas led annual hiring with 24,800 added jobs, followed by North Carolina at 15,500 and Ohio at 11,900, as infrastructure, energy, manufacturing and data center investment drove demand.
28 states and D.C. also added construction jobs from May to June; Texas gained 5,200, while California posted the biggest monthly drop at 4,100 and New York lost 3,900.
California recorded the steepest annual decline at 15,400 jobs, and AGC warned that tariff uncertainty, stalled long-term highway funding, power constraints and resistance to data centers could weaken future activity.
