Summary
Barbara Primiero filed a wrongful-death and negligence suit Tuesday in Allegheny County, alleging UPMC Mercy and two physicians failed to prevent and treat the infection that led to her husband Reno Primiero’s death.
The complaint says Reno Primiero was admitted on Nov. 4, 2024, developed fever, cough and low oxygen while immunosuppressed, was discharged, then returned Nov. 11 with pneumonia before being diagnosed with Legionnaires’ disease.
Reno Primiero’s condition worsened over several days, the suit says, leading to an ICU transfer, intubation and his death on Nov. 23, 2024.
UPMC Mercy said it appropriately reported positive Legionella cases to the Allegheny County Health Department, which conducted extensive testing on Nov. 20, 2024, and found no Legionella pneumophila.
