It looks more like a brave artistic leap, though one clearly fueled by a need to escape the pressure that followed *Brat*. The facts point that way. *Brat* was not just a hit but a cultural event: a Metacritic leader, a Grammy winner, a Billboard success, and the engine of “Brat Summer.” The easiest commercial move would have been to make *Brat 2.0*. Charli XCX explicitly refused that route, saying repetition would be uninspiring, and instead made an 11-track, 29-minute record built quickly around guitar riffs, sparse arrangements, and demo-like brevity. That is a risk, not a safe sequel strategy. The new album also reads as an artist trying to regain control of her work and body. She has spoken on the record about nerve damage from the physically punishing *Brat* tour, and her recent London show with a three-piece band suggested a less strenuous live model. In that sense, the pivot is practical as well as creative: a new sound that fits a new phase of performing. Lyrically, *Music, Fashion, Film* is less a retreat than a confrontation with success. Songs such as “SS26,” “Wink Wink,” and “I’m Afraid” examine celebrity, identity, happiness, and anxiety with unusual bluntness. The Cronenberg coda — “Oblivion is freedom” — reinforces that she is actively resisting the trap of legacy management. So yes, it is partly an escape — but mainly from expectation, overexposure, and self-repetition. That makes it less a dodge than a deliberate act of artistic self-preservation.

Charli XCX has released “Music, Fashion, Film,” a 29-minute album of 11 short, guitar-led songs written within weeks after what she described as a sudden burst of inspiration.
