The rescuer has not been publicly identified. Based on witness accounts, he was a male day-tripper who had rented or was using a neighbouring beach hut at West Mersea and swam out against the incoming tide three times, bringing back two children. What is known comes mainly from eyewitness Beverly Smit, who described him as a “Good Samaritan” from a nearby hut. She said the water was cold and the tide was coming in hard, making the rescue extremely difficult. Craig Bowe, 42, told the BBC he plunged into the sea three times after hearing screams at West Mersea on Wednesday, pulling Shally Rahman, 41, and Samiha Rahman, 15, from the water and helping a seven-year-old boy onto a lifeboat.
The rescue unfolded after the boy was apparently stranded on a sandbank and cut off by the incoming tide, with Bowe saying strong current and waves repeatedly hit him as he swam about 150 yards offshore.
Despite those efforts, the mother and daughter died after trying to bring the boy to shore; the boy was airlifted to hospital and remained in critical condition on Friday, while three others were also taken to hospital.
Carly Bowe, who helped perform CPR on the beach during their daughter's 10th-birthday day trip, said bystanders and emergency crews gave the family the best chance possible as Essex Police sought more witnesses.
