Ruiz Family Denounces 38-Year-Old's Madison Police Killing as Video Fuels Body-Camera Scrutiny

Elsa Ruiz publicly mourned her 38-year-old son for the first time, saying Corey Ruiz “did not deserve to be taken out like that” after Madison police shot him Wednesday.
Ben Crump, appearing with the family, called the shooting an unjustified “execution” and said cellphone footage was crucial because Madison police do not use body-worn cameras.
Police say Ruiz pulled a knife during a struggle with four officers and injured one officer, who then fired the shots; the chief said the widely shared video does not show officers’ perspective.
All four officers are on administrative leave while a state investigation and a separate review by the city’s independent police monitor examine the killing.
