Tropical Storm Genevieve Set to Become 2026 East Pacific's First Major Hurricane

Summary
Genevieve strengthened from Tropical Depression Seven-E into a tropical storm Friday and is forecast to rapidly intensify into the 2026 eastern Pacific season’s first major hurricane.
The storm was centered about 585 miles south of Zihuatanejo, Mexico, and current forecasts keep it over the open eastern Pacific with no threat to land, including Hawaii.
Fausto, now a Category 2 hurricane ahead of Genevieve, is expected to weaken over cooler water and dry air as it nears Hawaii, possibly arriving Tuesday night into Wednesday as a weak tropical storm or remnant low.
Hawaii could still see heavy rain and high surf from Fausto if it holds together, while the National Hurricane Center is also tracking another system southwest of the islands with a high chance of development next week.
Genevieve’s rise would help close an early-season gap in eastern Pacific activity, where the average second hurricane usually forms by July 15 and the third by July 31.
