Intel’s JHL8140 controller lets the 1.6-ounce hub run without its own power brick while still supporting one 8K/30Hz display or two 4K/60Hz displays, plus 10Gbps data across its USB-C ports.
100W USB-C power input is split into up to 77W for the host laptop and 23W for the dock, and Fast Role Swap kept attached drives running gracefully when external power was interrupted.
The main tradeoffs are the lack of built-in Ethernet and dependence on a separate 19.6-inch host cable—losing it makes the dock unusable, and lower-spec replacement cables can reduce performance.
ZDNET said buyers who only need basic port expansion may find it overkill, while users needing portable dual-display performance across Windows, Linux, ChromeOS, Android and supported Macs may find it worth the price.
