Both dyssomnias and parasomnias showed reduced structure in the thalamus—especially the pulvinar, which helps direct attention and cognitive control—potentially explaining slower reactions, poorer decisions and more errors after disrupted sleep.
Parasomnias also showed distinct changes in the posterior cingulate cortex, a region involved in motivation, decision-making and emotional control, while dyssomnias showed no consistent disorder-specific structural pattern.
FIU researchers said the findings could support earlier diagnosis and more tailored treatments for the 50 million to 70 million Americans living with sleep disorders, though it remains unclear whether the brain changes are causes, effects or both.
