Summary
21-year-old Aaron Strachan was given a minimum five-year sentence and an order for lifelong restriction after abducting and raping a 15-year-old girl in central Edinburgh.
25 May 2025 CCTV and court evidence showed Strachan, wearing a balaclava, threatened the girl with a knife at a Princes Street bus stop, forced her to a York Place basement and raped her.
Hours before the rape, Strachan stabbed a man in the hand with a knife, and days later he struck another man on the head with a claw hammer; he admitted both serious assaults.
The High Court heard Strachan had a record of violence, robbery and weapons offences, and Judge Michael O'Grady said it was highly improbable his violence and mental disorder would be resolved in jail.
Scotland's lifelong restriction orders keep offenders in custody beyond their minimum term until parole judges deem them safe, and the judge said Strachan may remain detained or supervised for life.
