Meta’s new subscription plans are likely to make AI on Threads feel more tiered over time: free for casual use, but better for paying users. Right now, the Threads change is simple: Meta AI is being added to direct messages globally, so users can privately send posts, images, links, and videos to the chatbot and ask follow-up questions without leaving the app. Meta says the basic AI experience remains free. But Meta is also testing paid AI plans under the “Meta One” brand. Meta One Plus, priced at $7.99 a month, and Meta One Premium, at $19.99, are designed to give users more AI capacity, support for bigger or more complex requests, and expanded image and video generation. Premium also adds more compute for deeper reasoning on harder tasks. Those plans are not yet tied specifically to Threads, but because Meta AI is being embedded across Meta’s apps, they are expected to shape the Threads experience too. In practice, that means the average Threads user may still get standard AI help in DMs and, in some markets, in public replies. Heavy users, creators, or businesses may eventually see a stronger version of that assistant inside the same app, with faster or more capable responses and fewer limits. That would quietly create a split between basic AI access and premium AI performance, even if the interface looks similar. Meta is also giving users ways to reduce AI’s visibility on Threads, including muting @meta.ai, hiding replies, or marking AI posts as “Not interested.”
