Bipartisan senators pushed back on Donald Trump’s demand that Canada compensate the U.S. for wildfire smoke, with Democrats calling the idea unrealistic and Republicans focusing instead on forest management.
Nearly 900 Canadian wildfires have sent smoke into U.S. cities including Chicago, Detroit, Minneapolis and New York, degrading air quality after fires believed to have been sparked by thousands of lightning strikes in early July.
Trump said he raised the issue with Prime Minister Mark Carney at the FIFA World Cup final and suggested Canada should pay damages or face higher tariffs.
One Republican, Sen. Bernie Moreno of Ohio, is preparing legislation to hold Canada accountable, but the broader Senate response framed the smoke as a cross-border natural disaster rather than a billable offense.
