Google Set to Unveil 4 Pixel 11 Models on Aug. 12 as Price Hike Rumors Grow

Q: With AI driving up costs and rumors of RAM downgrades, is Google's pricey new Pixel 11 actually a step backward for consumers?

For many buyers, the Pixel 11 does look like a worse value, even if it may not be a worse phone. The strongest case against it is simple: leaks point to higher upfront prices with only modest visible upgrades. Google is reportedly dropping 128GB and making 256GB the base storage, which helps justify some of the increase on the Pixel 11 and Pixel 11 Pro. But that still removes the cheaper entry point. For the Pro XL and Pro Fold, reported hikes appear to be more direct, with little offset beyond routine refinements. The RAM issue is more troubling. Multiple leaks suggest the Pixel 11 Pro’s 256GB model could fall from 16GB to 12GB, and some reports even claim the base Pixel 11 could start at 8GB. If true, that is a clear downgrade on paper at a time when Google is pushing harder into on-device AI, which benefits from more memory, not less. Paying more for less RAM would be difficult to defend. That said, “step backward” may be too broad. The Tensor G6, if it really uses TSMC’s 2nm process, could bring meaningful gains in efficiency, thermals and battery life. Brighter displays, camera sensor updates and security improvements may also improve real-world use, even if the design barely changes. So the answer depends on price sensitivity. Buyers who want the latest Pixel software, AI tools and 256GB standard storage may still see value. Buyers focused on hardware-per-dollar are likely to see the Pixel 11 as an incremental update priced like a major one.
