Michigan reported 9,253 confirmed cyclosporiasis cases since June 22, up from 8,176 in the prior state update, with 160 hospitalizations recorded as of July 23.
State health officials are still tracing the source, but said lettuce or salad greens remain possible drivers of the outbreak.
MDHHS urged residents to favor whole heads of lettuce over bagged salads, discard outer leaves, wash inner leaves, and cook greens to at least 158F when possible because Cyclospora can resist routine washing.
The CDC said cases have been identified in 34 states and expects illnesses to keep rising through the end of August, when the usual Cyclospora season ends.
