White House Rebukes John Mellencamp Over 2025 Gulf of America Mockery

Davis Ingle, a White House spokesman, said Monday that “nobody in their right mind cares” what Mellencamp thinks after the singer mocked Trump’s 2025 order renaming the Gulf of Mexico.
At a Saturday show in Holmdel, New Jersey, Mellencamp interrupted “Pink Houses” to sneer, “The Gulf of Mexico? ... It’s not the Gulf of America? What a stupid f------g idea.”
The exchange followed a similar July 26 concert criticism in Wantagh, New York, where Mellencamp also attacked the renaming and referenced the waterway’s long historical name.
The flare-up extends a culture-and-politics clash around Trump’s renaming order, with the White House framing Mellencamp as an out-of-touch celebrity and the singer using a signature 1983 hit to sharpen the protest.
