DNC Panel Keeps South Carolina First in 6-State Window as Critics See 2028 Progressive Check

Summary
Friday’s vote kept South Carolina as Democrats’ first nominating contest and set an early 6-state window of Nevada, New Hampshire, Michigan, Virginia and New Mexico before Super Tuesday.
Chuck Todd said Monday the sequence appears designed to make a 2028 progressive insurgent’s path harder, arguing the lineup favors electorates less friendly to left-wing candidates and leaves Virginia as an establishment backstop.
Progressives had already voiced frustration, with Axios citing a Rules and Bylaws Committee member who said putting South Carolina first could shut down a progressive candidacy early and was not a winning strategy.
South Carolina Democrats pushed back, with chair Christale Spain saying a progressive such as Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez could win there through retail politics rather than being blocked by the state’s position.
New Hampshire Democrats also objected, saying the committee ignored lessons from 2024 and that the vote would not alter the state’s own primary realities.
