Nevada Jobless Rate Eases to 5.1% in June as Carson City Leads at 3.9%

At the same time, its unemployment count remained low at about 1,157 people in June, well below Reno and Las Vegas in both rate and scale. The broader Nevada data also show why rates can fall even without strong local hiring: the statewide labor force shrank in June, and the number of unemployed people declined. When fewer people are counted as actively seeking work, the unemployment rate can improve even if total employment growth is soft. So Carson City’s low jobless rate does not necessarily mean it is adding jobs. Nevada’s unemployment rate fell because the number of unemployed residents dropped faster than the labor force shrank. In June, Nevada’s seasonally adjusted labor force declined by 6,845 people to 1,686,765. But within that total, the number of unemployed residents fell by 2,143 to 86,472, while the number of employed residents fell by 4,702. Since the unemployment rate measures unemployed people as a share of the labor force, that drop in unemployment was enough to push the rate down from 5.2% to 5.1%, even though fewer people were working or looking for work overall. That means the lower rate was not simply the result of stronger hiring. Part of the change came from people leaving the labor force altogether, which removes them from the unemployment count if they are no longer actively seeking work. DETR also said Nevada’s labor force participation rate decreased in June, matching the national pattern that month. At the same time, payroll data showed employers still added jobs. Seasonally adjusted nonfarm employment rose by 3,800 in June, led by leisure and hospitality and education and health services. That does not conflict with the labor-force decline because the payroll survey counts jobs at businesses, while the unemployment rate comes from a separate household-based measure of residents’ employment status. So the rate dropped for two reasons at once: fewer Nevadans were counted as unemployed, and fewer people were in the labor force.
