Summary
Kelly Smith is pressing the Senedd to support more Brain Tumour Research after husband Joshua, 34, was diagnosed with glioblastoma, an incurable cancer with a typical prognosis of 12 to 18 months.
A 4.5cm brain mass was found only after Kelly pushed for a return to hospital following repeated dismissals; surgeons removed about 95% in February, and Joshua has since completed six weeks of radiotherapy and chemotherapy.
Around 3,200 people in the UK are diagnosed with glioblastoma each year, treatments have not improved in more than 20 years, one-third survive beyond 12 months and only 4% live five years or more.
Brain Tumour Research says no brain cancer patients were recruited to clinical trials in Wales from 2019 to 2024 and is calling for £35 million a year in national research spending, more trials and better access to innovative treatments.
