Arianespace Sets Aug. 27 Ariane 6 Flight to Launch MTG-I2 on 1st Geostationary Mission

Q: What will MTG-I2’s lightning and rapid-scan imaging reveal that today’s European weather satellites still miss?

MTG-I2 is expected to expose the earliest signs and full evolution of severe storms that today’s European Meteosat service often cannot follow in enough detail. Its Lightning Imager will continuously detect lightning day and night across a wide field of view, giving forecasters a direct signal that convective storms are intensifying even when cloud-top pictures alone are ambiguous. That matters because lightning is a key marker of rapidly developing thunderstorms and can reveal dangerous storm growth before traditional imagery clearly shows it. Its Flexible Combined Imager will also deliver rapid-scan images over Europe every 2.5 minutes, about twice as fast as the current Meteosat-11 rapid service. That faster refresh, combined with improved resolution and sensitivity, should let meteorologists track short-lived features that are still hard to monitor today, especially fast-rising storm towers and overshooting tops linked to severe weather, as well as dense fog, dust plumes and other quickly changing phenomena. Working alongside Meteosat-12, MTG-I2 should give Europe much closer to near-real-time monitoring of storms from their formation through maturity. In practical terms, it will reveal lightning bursts, explosive cloud growth and other fast-changing warning signs that current European weather satellites can miss or capture too slowly for the best possible nowcasting.

Aug. 27 is the target date for Arianespace's VA270 mission, which will send the MTG-I2 weather satellite into geostationary orbit from Europe's Spaceport in French Guiana.
The flight will use the Ariane 62 configuration and marks Ariane 6's first mission to geostationary orbit, expanding the new rocket's operational profile.
VA270 will also be the fourth Ariane 6 launch of 2026, adding another near-term milestone as Europe ramps up use of its new heavy-lift launcher.
