Samsung Cuts Galaxy Z Fold 8 Hinge to 2 Positions, Dropping Flex Mode

Galaxy Z Fold 8 can open only fully shut or fully flat, removing Samsung’s Flex Mode despite using the same “Flex Titanium” hinge branding as the pricier Z Fold 8 Ultra.
That limitation means no hands-free tabletop use, no instant camera previews, and no split-screen controls for apps like YouTube, Netflix, or some mobile games.
Samsung has not explained the change, but the report points to cost cutting and a global RAM shortage that may have complicated development of a new hinge.
The missing hinge flexibility, along with the lack of a telephoto lens, appears to help explain why the Z Fold 8 is priced £200/$200 below the $2,099.99 Z Fold 8 Ultra.
The downgrade also breaks with every Galaxy Z Fold since 2019, making the standard Fold 8 less versatile even as Samsung pushes its latest foldables into the market.
