Q: Why did today’s NYT Connections feel easy to some players but potentially tricky to anyone missing the classroom-board clue?

It felt easy because three of the four groups were fairly accessible through common vocabulary: NAIL, RIVET, SCREW and STAPLE clearly point to fasteners; BASIC, MID, PLAIN and VANILLA all suggest something ordinary; and GEM, NUGGET, PEARL and WORD are familiar expressions for small pieces of wisdom. For many players, those links were visible without much wordplay. The potential difficulty came from the purple set, which depended on spotting a fill-in-the-blank pattern rather than a direct shared meaning. BLACK, CHALK, CORK and WHITE only make sense together if a player sees them as types of classroom boards: blackboard, chalkboard, corkboard and whiteboard. Anyone who did not make that school-themed connection could be left with four words that seemed unrelated. The board also included a mild red herring. Words such as WHITE, CHALK and VANILLA can suggest pale colors or blandness, which may have pulled players toward the wrong grouping. STAPLE also had to be read in its hardware sense, not its more common meaning of a basic item, and MID relies on slang for mediocre. So the puzzle was straightforward for players who recognized classroom terminology, but more awkward for those who missed that final word-building clue.
