A federal Education Department probe is examining whether Minnesota violated parental-rights law after a complaint said parents were not told about classroom activities involving “MyGender Dolls” for children as young as 4.
The department said a finding under the Protection of Pupil Rights Amendment could trigger a Justice Department referral and the loss of federal education funding for the Minnesota Department of Education.
Minnesota’s education agency denied any role, saying the dolls stem from a University of Minnesota program, while the governor’s office and university said the project was privately funded and not being used in public school classrooms this fall.
Researchers described the dolls as a therapeutic tool for licensed professionals, but federal officials called them sexually explicit and said using them with young children without parental consent undermines parents’ authority.
The Minnesota case fits a wider Trump administration push against school gender-identity policies; this week it also warned districts in Maryland and Michigan over alleged secrecy around student gender transitions.
