Avi Loeb and Vanderbilt PhD student Oem Trivedi posted a paper arguing that rare galaxies with little dark matter can be used to test what dark matter is allowed to do.
The study says any viable model must let ordinary matter separate from dark matter, then sets bounds on dissipative dark matter’s abundance and cooling time and on ultralight fuzzy dark matter’s escape from shallow gravitational wells.
Four systems highlighted as key examples—NGC 1052 DF2, DF4, DF9 and FCC 224—show internal gravity close to what their stars alone would produce, far below that expected for conventional dark matter halos.
Those galaxies may have lost dark matter through tidal stripping, formed from tidal debris, or emerged after high-speed galaxy collisions, making them a complementary probe alongside cosmological observations and direct-detection experiments.
Loeb frames the result as another incremental step in a century-long effort to explain the 84% of matter that is invisible yet essential to galaxy formation.
