Gartner Sees 80% of Large Software Orgs Forming Platform Teams by 2026

80% of large software engineering organizations are expected to establish platform engineering teams by 2026, Gartner says, up from 45% in 2022.
That growth is tied to rising cognitive load from modern tools and architectures, as engineers spend more time wrestling with CI pipelines, Kubernetes, secrets management and other delivery scaffolding.
The report argues platform engineering is spreading because the old DevOps operating model stops scaling across dozens of teams, creating duplicated deployment, observability and on-call work.
It frames successful platform teams as internal product groups whose self-service tools must win developer adoption, cut lead times and recovery times, and reduce failed changes rather than just add infrastructure.
