Summary
More than 11,000 Irish jobseekers had welfare payments reduced in 2025 for failing to engage with employment services, up 129% from 4,838 a year earlier.
The cuts typically reduce the most common weekly payment to €164 from €254, with the Department of Social Protection calling the sanction a final step to push claimants back into contact with Intreo services.
4,986 cases involved missing an activation review after at least one earlier missed appointment, while 3,717 were for failing without good cause to attend follow-on appointments.
Jobseeker’s Allowance recipients accounted for 10,097 of the penalties, far outweighing 694 on Jobseeker’s Benefit, with smaller numbers tied to transitional and self-employed schemes.
The department said the reduced rate is lifted immediately once a claimant re-engages, arguing both the sanction and its duration are within the person’s control.
