The biggest coastal threats are not the temperature but the ocean: dangerous rip currents, large breaking waves, and minor coastal flooding that can quickly turn a beach trip deadly. Forecasters say south-facing beaches from San Diego County to Santa Barbara County face high surf through Saturday, with swells boosted by Hurricane Genevieve and other Pacific storms. Those swells can produce strong rip currents that pull swimmers and surfers out to sea, and waves powerful enough to sweep people off rocks, jetties, docks, and even the shoreline. Officials have warned of an increased risk of ocean drowning, especially for inexperienced swimmers. The danger is compounded by evening high tides. A coastal flooding advisory is in effect for beaches and other low-lying coastal areas, with the highest tides expected Friday night. Minor flooding could cover beach parking lots, boardwalks, and some roads, while localized beach erosion is also possible. Even shallow floodwater can create hazards for drivers and pedestrians. Humidity along the coast adds another hidden risk. Even where air temperatures stay in the 80s, muggy conditions can make it feel hotter and keep nights warmer, reducing relief from the heat. The practical advice from weather officials is clear: stay out of the water if possible, swim only near lifeguards if you must enter, avoid rocks and jetties, and do not ignore flooded roads or barricades. A cooler beach weekend is not necessarily a safer one.

Extreme heat warnings take effect across nearly all of Southern California from 10 a.m. Friday through Sunday evening, with forecasters calling for one of the region’s hottest weekends this year.
Saturday is expected to be the peak, with parts of the San Fernando Valley, San Gabriel Valley and Inland Empire climbing well above 100 degrees and some areas nearing daily records.
