161 of the mapped companies trace at least one founder to Microsoft, 143 to the University of Washington, 58 to Amazon and 20 to Google, making those four the state’s main founder hubs.
64% of featured companies grew out of another company on the map, and 44% had founders who worked at two or more Washington organizations before launching their startups.
AI emerged as a dominant theme even without being a formal selection filter, with WTIA highlighting Seattle’s 23% share of U.S. AI talent and naming Ai2, OpenAI and Anthropic as potential future hubs.
The map covers only 625 of Washington’s roughly 25,000 tech companies, but WTIA says it is designed to argue for broader community investment as newer hubs—often run by out-of-state firms—remain less anchored locally.
