Mets, Tigers Scratch 2 Starters Ahead of Aug. 3 MLB Trade Deadline

Freddy Peralta and Casey Mize were pulled from their Friday starts as clubs tried to avoid an injury that could derail trade talks less than three days before the deadline.
Peralta’s scratch fits the Mets’ clear seller posture: the last-place club fired Carlos Mendoza in late June and is also expected to shop pending free agents including Luis Robert Jr., Tyrone Taylor, Clay Holmes and Brooks Raley.
Detroit’s move on Mize may also reflect a recent groin issue, making his situation less straightforward than Peralta’s even as he remains a trade candidate.
The Tigers still had roughly a 1-in-4 playoff chance entering Friday, which helps explain why they let Tarik Skubal start Thursday and have not finalized whether to sell players such as Mize, Gleyber Torres or Kenley Jansen.
