More than a week after Madison police fatally shot Corey Ruiz, District Attorney Ismael Ozanne asked residents to be patient as Wisconsin’s Division of Criminal Investigation reviews the case.
Ozanne said DCI will deliver its findings to his office but is unlikely to recommend charges, leaving him to personally review the evidence, seek any follow-up investigation and decide whether any officer should be charged.
Ruiz was killed last week near Williamson and Baldwin streets after officers said they saw him checking vehicles and that he used a knife to injure 1 of the 4 officers detaining him.
Ozanne called Ruiz’s death a tragedy, said police shootings deepen community fear of police encounters, and urged people to protest peacefully while he informs Ruiz’s family before any public charging decision.
