32.5% of Married Americans Report No Sex in 2024 Survey

1,893 married respondents in NORC’s 2024 General Social Survey reported widely varying sexual frequency, with 32.5% saying they had no sex in the past 12 months and only 4.1% reporting more than three times a week.
Weekly sex appeared far from universal: 12.9% said about once a week and 12.2% said two or three times weekly, challenging assumptions that higher frequency is the main marker of relationship health.
Research cited in the report says marital satisfaction tends to rise from monthly to weekly intimacy, but gains level off beyond once a week, suggesting a “sweet spot” rather than a high-volume ideal.
Experts say lower frequency often reflects aging, parenting, work stress, medication side effects, hormonal shifts or cardiovascular and metabolic issues, and advise couples to discuss changes openly and seek medical evaluation when needed.
