Miami-Dade health officials confirmed one locally acquired dengue case in South Florida and issued an advisory as they coordinate surveillance, prevention and control efforts.
Dengue symptoms can appear within 14 days of an infected mosquito bite and typically include fever, severe muscle and joint pain, and sometimes a rash.
Illness usually lasts four days to a week, and officials said dengue is not contagious and is rarely fatal.
Residents were urged to use insect repellent and remove standing water, where mosquitoes gather and breed, to reduce exposure risk.
