Summary
Twenty-eight Israeli children who lost a parent serving in the country’s security forces finished a three-week Bar/Bat Mitzvah delegation across Chicago, Wisconsin, New York and New Jersey.
The IDF Widows & Orphans Organization said the trip was built to give bereaved children a meaningful rite-of-passage experience, pairing host families, camp activities and Broadway’s The Lion King with peer support.
Tal Goldstein-Almog, 11½, who was held hostage in Gaza for 51 days after Oct. 7, said the group gave him a safe place to share his story and connect with others who endured similar losses.
The program also linked Israeli and American Jewish children; organizer Daniel Elbaum said strengthening Jewish identity and solidarity can help communities confront antisemitism.
Founded in 1991, the organization supports more than 18,000 widows, widowers and orphans, a caseload that has grown by 359 widows and widowers and 910 new orphans since Oct. 7, 2023.
