Misiorowski’s own outing is the best evidence that the mound was difficult but still usable: he gave up only two hits, struck out 10, walked one, and worked seven innings. He also said it was “playable” after repairs and explicitly said it was not an excuse. What likely happened is that the mound affected comfort and consistency more than raw effectiveness. Misiorowski explained that, at 6-foot-7, his stride lands farther down the slope than most pitchers, so he is more sensitive to the landing area. A dry, hard, or slick mound can be especially noticeable for a power pitcher with a long reach, even if he can still overpower hitters. His stuff also gave him margin for error. He is known for elite velocity, often topping 100 mph, and he has recently produced other dominant starts with double-digit strikeouts. In other words, he had enough talent to miss bats despite imperfect footing. The game result also supports that distinction. The Angels did not string together sustained offense; their only scoring came on Wade Meckler’s two-run homer. That suggests the mound did not prevent Misiorowski from competing at a high level, but it may have contributed to one mistake or to the discomfort he described. Even Brewers manager Pat Murphy softened the point, saying the mound was “a little slick” and likely had some effect. So the most reasonable reading is that the surface was subpar and frustrating, not literally unplayable.
