India had more than 2.23 lakh DPIIT-recognised startups by March 2026, and universities are increasingly being cast as engines for creating founders and ventures rather than only awarding degrees.
55,200 startups were recognised in FY 2025-26 alone, reflecting a shift that campus incubators support at the fragile zero-to-one stage with labs, faculty access, peer networks and longer timelines than commercial accelerators.
₹945 crore under the Startup India Seed Fund Scheme has been committed across 219 incubators, with over ₹605 crore reaching more than 3,400 startups; other state-backed programmes also broadened campus innovation support.
72 Atal Innovation Mission centres have nurtured over 6,782 startups and created more than 32,000 jobs, while MeitY's TIDE 2.0 and 7,265 Institution Innovation Councils extend support into tech sectors and pre-incubation.
