Toronto made the smartest deadline bet by acquiring José Soriano. In a market where controllable starters were the rarest and most expensive asset, the Blue Jays acted on the right profile. Soriano is under team control through 2028, throws premium stuff, and fits both timelines: he can help immediately and still hold value if Toronto’s season drifts further off course. That matters more than a short-term rental in a deadline cycle where prices for pitching were described by rival executives as “wild” and “ridiculous.” The cost was steep — top prospect Arjun Nimmala plus Eddie Micheletti and Angel Rivero — but that is exactly what the market demanded for starters with multiple years of control. Rentals such as Kevin Gausman and Freddy Peralta brought meaningful but lighter returns; elite control cost much more. Toronto paid that premium for a younger arm it can build around, rather than for two months of help. Other contenders made strong win-now moves. The Dodgers got the best pitcher in Tarik Skubal, but blockbuster prices for a true ace make that a higher-risk, higher-cost swing. The Cubs did well with Gausman because the acquisition cost was moderate, yet he is a rental. The Phillies improved their roster, but not with the type of scarce controllable pitching that drove this deadline. Soriano may not be the most glamorous acquisition, but relative to market conditions, roster fit and future value, Toronto made the sharpest bet before the cutoff.

Philadelphia added Luis Arraez and reliever Caleb Kilian from San Francisco, sending pitching prospects Ramon Marquez and Marty Gair to the Giants in a deadline-day push to upgrade the lineup.
Arraez, 29, gives the Phillies a high-contact bat they lacked; the former batting champion entered 2026 as a .317 career hitter and is again in the race for a batting title.
The move is expected to trigger an infield reshuffle, with Arraez likely fitting at second base and multiple alignment options involving Bryce Harper, Alec Bohm and Bryson Stott.
Philadelphia also acquired left-hander Brooks Raley from the Mets and is still shopping for a starting pitcher before Monday's 6 p.m. ET trade deadline.
