GOP Sues California Over 75-Word Voter ID Summary for November Ballot Measure

California Republicans led by Assemblyman Carl DeMaio sued Attorney General Rob Bonta and Secretary of State Shirley Weber after officials rewrote the November initiative’s ballot summary.
The suit targets language saying the measure “prohibits” voting without government ID, arguing it would still let people cast ballots but block some from being counted.
Mail voting is central to that dispute: the proposal would require identifying numbers on ballot envelopes and would invalidate ballots lacking the last four digits of an approved ID number.
Bonta’s office said it is reviewing the petition and is confident the court will find it properly carried out its duty to prepare the title, summary and ballot label.
The fight comes after DeMaio’s group submitted more than 962,000 signatures in April to qualify the GOP-backed measure, which supporters say polls near 70% support.
