House of the Dragon Director Defends Season 3 Book Changes Ahead of Episode 8 Finale

Episode 7 adds a book-absent vision of Helaena riding Dreamfyre into battle and also depicts Corlys Velaryon kidnapped by Ormund Hightower, two of the season’s biggest departures from George R.R. Martin’s text.
Lopez-Corrado acknowledged diehard fans may see the changes as controversial, but said the writers and actors executed storylines that will carry directly into the finale.
Episode 8 is expected to feature the Battle of Tumbleton, a major conflict from the book, before the HBO prequel moves into a fourth and final season.
The defense comes after Martin’s 2024 blog post warning of "larger and more toxic" changes in seasons 3 and 4, criticism showrunner Ryan Condal said reflected disputes over adapting an incomplete history.
