San Antonio Investigators Probe 2-Year-Old's Death in Drainage Channel After Amber Alert

Q: How did a two-year-old manage to wander 500 yards to a water-filled drainage area completely unnoticed in the dark?

It is not yet clear, and police have not established a definitive explanation. What is confirmed is that investigators say Aryana Trevino Martinez, 2, was seen on surveillance video walking alone in an alley, and she was later found about 500 yards from where she disappeared in a heavily vegetated, water-filled drainage or creek area near Belle Ellen. That means she was capable of moving away from home on her own, at least for part of the time. A distance of roughly 500 yards is significant for a toddler, but not impossible over the course of several hours, especially if she was not immediately located and if the route led through alleys, yards or open passages rather than busy streets. The darkness, brush, and overgrown terrain could also have made her much harder for neighbors or searchers to spot. Just as important, investigators have said they are still seeking more surveillance footage to determine whether she was with anyone else at any point and to reconstruct her final movements. Police also noted she was found near the drainage area, not clearly pulled from the water, and they have not released a cause or manner of death. So it remains unknown whether she wandered the entire way unnoticed, whether environmental hazards played the key role, or whether another person was involved. At this stage, the unanswered question reflects the limits of the public evidence, not a settled finding. The investigation by San Antonio police and the medical examiner is ongoing.
