Laboratory and pathology tests are expected to look for infectious agents, poisoning, metabolic disorders, hidden organ disease, and other abnormalities that could either mimic heatstroke or make the lions more vulnerable to extreme heat. Toxicology and tissue analysis can also help rule out non-heat causes. If the results show no evidence of infection, toxins or other disease, they would strengthen the case that the lions died from heatstroke leading to dehydration and multiple organ failure. If they do identify another factor, the official cause could shift to that condition, or to a combination of heat stress plus an underlying illness. In short, the tests are meant to move the zoo from suspicion to medical confirmation: whether extreme heat killed the three lions, or whether heat was only one part of what happened.

Three lionesses at Tokyo’s Tama Zoological Park died after showing dehydration and multiple organ failure, with the zoo saying suspected heatstroke is the likely cause.
Ten of the park’s 16 lions have suffered loss of appetite and reduced activity since mid-July, and several are still being treated as keepers add water spraying, better ventilation and spot air conditioners.
The zoo said Japan’s humid heat hit suddenly after the rainy season ended in late July, creating conditions different from the dry heat lions are associated with in Africa.
Japan’s broader heat toll is rising: 18,600 people were hospitalized for heatstroke in July 20-26 alone, and the country records about 1,300 heat-related deaths a year as climate change intensifies extreme heat.
