Scott Bessent said a deal to reopen the Strait of Hormuz could come “today or tomorrow,” after Trump said the waterway might be “completely open” by Tuesday as phase one of wider talks.
Tehran publicly rejected that account: Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baghaei said Iran has no negotiations with the U.S. and is only discussing a temporary safe route with Oman.
One cargo vessel was hit by an unknown projectile off Oman’s coast Monday night, forcing its crew to abandon ship and leaving one seafarer missing, underscoring the danger around the strait.
Brent crude rose 2.7% as traffic remained severely disrupted—at least six ships transited Monday versus about 100 in peacetime—with some vessels hugging the Omani coast and switching off transponders.
Trump said reopening the strait would be the first step before any second-phase discussion of Iran’s nuclear program, while Qatar said mediators in Oman, Pakistan and Doha were exchanging drafts between both sides.
