Summary
Astell & Kern’s new PD5 portable music player doubles the DAC count of the SR35, letting users switch between four and eight Cirrus Logic CS43198 chips.
28 hours of quoted battery life marks an eight-hour gain over its predecessor, while PD 3.0 charging refills the device in about 2.5 hours.
EnviroTune is the main new software feature, analyzing ambient noise to adjust playback; the player also supports 32-bit/384kHz PCM and native DSD256.
Bluetooth 5.3, dual-band Wi-Fi and aptX HD, LDAC and LHDC support position the PD5 for high-resolution wireless and streaming use on its Android-based platform.
Price and release date remain undisclosed; the PD5 will next be shown in Hong Kong, Shenzhen from Aug. 14-16 and CanJam SoCal on Aug. 29-30.
