Yes—but probably only if admins misuse it. WhatsApp’s new @all feature is useful for urgent updates, yet it risks becoming the kind of notification override that makes large groups feel unmanageable if members are pinged too often. The main concern is that @all can alert users even in muted groups. That breaks an expectation many people rely on in large chats: muting the noise while still checking in on their own terms. If too many “urgent” messages turn out to be routine, users may stop trusting the group, mute @all specifically, leave the chat, or shift to smaller sub-groups and Communities where alerts feel more relevant. WhatsApp has built in some safeguards. In groups larger than 32 people, only admins can use @all, which should reduce spam. Users can also mute @all notifications in settings. Those controls matter, but they do not solve the underlying problem of judgment. As with Slack, Discord, and Teams, broadcast-style alerts work only when group norms are strict and rare use is enforced. The broader rollout suggests WhatsApp knows large groups need structure, not just louder notifications. The new option to create a similar group quickly, along with Communities and admin-only announcement spaces, gives organizers a way to split side discussions from high-priority updates. That may be the real safety valve. So the feature could backfire in poorly run groups, but in well-moderated ones it is more likely to improve coordination than drive people away.

The changes target common pain points in busy chats: hidden-voter polls support sensitive decisions, vote deadlines help time-sensitive coordination, and a single tag can alert an entire group.
Creating a new group directly from an existing chat also lets users split side discussions without rebuilding participant lists, reducing clutter in schools, clubs, volunteer groups and businesses.
The rollout extends WhatsApp’s broader shift beyond basic messaging, following additions such as Communities, Channels, screen sharing and group voice chat.
