Saxifraga candelabrum, a wildflower growing at 2,500-3,300 meters in southwestern China, was confirmed to trap, digest and absorb nutrients from insects—the first verified carnivorous plant in the 2,000-species Saxifragales order.
Nitrogen-15 tracing showed prey-derived nitrogen moved from fruit flies into the plant’s tissues, while tests also found digestive enzyme activity in its sticky reddish glandular hairs.
The highest nitrogen levels ended up in the flowers, consistent with the plant’s single lifetime reproductive cycle and its need to boost seed production in nutrient-poor rock-face habitats.
Field experiments suggested scent helps lure small prey, but larger fly pollinators can escape the sticky hairs, letting the plant feed without undermining pollination.
The finding, published in Nature Communications, validates Charles Darwin’s 1875 suspicion that related Saxifraga species might be carnivorous and hints more such plants may await discovery on the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau.
