That makes him a practical short-notice replacement who should help the transition in camp and give the staff a dependable veteran body. But the broader picture matters more. Washington’s answer at corner is not Moreau by himself. The team has already invested in reshaping the group, with Douglas joining a room that includes Mike Sainristil, Trey Amos and Amik Robertson. Douglas appears to be the more meaningful addition at the top of the depth chart, while Moreau projects more as rotational help and injury protection. So the secondary can still be functional in 2026, but only if the younger corners develop and the veteran additions hold up. Moreau raises the floor; he does not solve the unit’s biggest uncertainty, which is whether Washington has enough high-end, reliable coverage talent over a full season.

Washington placed Ahkello Witherspoon on the Reserve/Retired List on Tuesday after the 31-year-old cornerback informed the team that morning he was leaving the NFL.
The move came just one day after Witherspoon practiced and less than three months after he signed a one-year, $1.41 million contract with the Commanders in May.
Fabian Moreau was signed to fill the roster spot left by Witherspoon, who will not play for Washington this fall.
Witherspoon exits after 96 career games, 64 starts, 243 tackles and 13 interceptions across stints with the 49ers, Steelers and Rams.
