The unfinished feeling also comes from the sequel’s larger continuity. The revival established that Alex moved on, married Damien Penwulf and had a daughter, Billie. That meant the writers had to address a beloved original relationship without undoing the new family story. Executive producer David Henrie told TVLine that any option was difficult: breaking Alex and Mason up would anger fans, but keeping Mason fully in the picture would conflict with the sequel’s established life for Alex. He said killing Mason was the “cleanest” choice. So the show leaves their love story emotionally open by intention. It lets Alex and Mason say goodbye, affirms that he still matters deeply to her, and preserves the idea that in a magical universe their bond can remain meaningful—even if their ending is no longer a conventional happy one.
