Summary
Wednesday’s eclipse will be visible from western Europe to Canada and the northern U.S., but forecast cloud and rain could spoil viewing in parts of eastern Canada, the mid-Atlantic, the eastern Great Lakes and southern Alaska.
Western Europe has the strongest outlook: a heat wave is expected to coincide with mostly clear skies across Spain, Portugal, France, southern England, Belgium, the Netherlands and much of Germany and Poland.
Most of New England, northern Alaska and parts of the northern Great Lakes have the best U.S.-Canada prospects, while the Canadian Rockies, Northern Plains and parts of Montana face a cloudier view.
A total eclipse lasting up to about 2 minutes will track from extreme northern Russia through eastern Greenland and western Iceland into northern Spain; surrounding areas, including Canada and parts of the U.S., will see only a partial eclipse.
Timing varies by region—morning in Alaska and northern Canada, early afternoon in the northern U.S. and eastern Canada, and evening in western Europe and northwest Africa—with some European locations getting a sunset eclipse.
