The progenitor was a Wolf-Rayet star about 20 times the sun’s mass that had shed hydrogen and helium; astronomers say shells of expelled material let them map the stripped star’s environment before collapse.
Rubin’s rapid-cadence 10-year sky survey is expected to catch many more such transients, giving researchers a way to test whether other stripped stars follow a similar path to explosion.
