Infleqtion said Eaton selected it for a multi-year, multi-million-dollar research program to apply quantum computing hardware to U.S. grid contingency analysis.
Contingency analysis tests how the grid responds when transmission lines or generators fail, and Infleqtion argues classical systems struggle as interconnected networks create too many what-if scenarios.
The subcontract sits within Eaton’s 24-month, $7 million award from the Air Force Research Laboratory, which also includes Penn State and targets grid security against concurrent threats.
Eaton and Infleqtion aim to improve utilities’ reliability analysis so they can better predict cascading outages, cut blackout risk and limit the economic damage from power disruptions.
The work also aligns with the Department of Energy’s Genesis Mission, which is pushing AI and advanced computing to speed grid modernization and national-security energy research.
